Term: 6 months (Part-Time)

The Strategic Research & Evaluation team helps PSI figure out “what works.” We fill the evidence gaps around effectiveness of marketing and health service delivery strategies to influence global health policy and practice.

 

Funded by USAID as the flagship initiative in the private sector, Strengthening Health Outcomes through the Private Sector Plus (SHOPS Plus) is a five-year $150 million project aiming to increase access to and use of priority health services and improving the equity and effectiveness of the health system through public-private engagement. SHOPS Plus builds from the work achieved through the SHOPS project, which ended in January 2016, and contributes to the achievement of major global efforts, including Ending Preventable Child and Maternal Deaths, AIDS-free generation, and Family Planning 2020.

 

Under SHOPS Plus, PSI and its partner Abt Associates are conducting a qualitative research study examining the barriers and triggers among clinical family planning (FP) providers to providing effective and appropriate family planning counseling tailored to client needs. The study will apply principles in behavioral economics in order to understand the influences of the barriers and triggers identified in this study. The Strategic Research & Evaluation team will take the lead on implementing the study, which will be conducted in India and Tanzania.

 

We are looking for a Qualitative Research Consultant who is excited about qualitative research methods to take the lead on developing the framework for analysis and interpretation of qualitative data collected through this study, as well as ensuring data quality and reporting results.

Your contribution

Lead qualitative data analysis and interpretation, ensure quality of data collection and cleaning, and report study results:

  •  Set data analysis framework to ensure comparability across study sites, in line with study objectives
  • Lead on analysis and interpretation of qualitative data, ensuring consistency of study implementation across both sites
  • Provide support for training of field research staff in conducting qualitative interviews
  • Ensure quality of data collection and cleaning in Tanzania
  • Conduct components of qualitative data analysis
  • Conduct comparative data analysis of data from both India and Tanzania
  • Draft final study report

 

What are we looking for?

The basics

  • You have a Master’s degree or higher in relevant discipline (anthropology, sociology, or other social or behavioral sciences field)
  • You have at least 5 years of demonstrated experience fielding qualitative research studies in low resource settings
  • You have a track record in family planning and reproductive health research
  • You are a skilled trainer of field research staff with demonstrated ability to promote adherence to data quality assurance
  • You have in-depth expertise in qualitative data analysis methods and techniques
  • You have excellent technical writing skills
  • You have strong time management skills and ability to work independently
  • You have the ability to travel to Tanzania
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States.

What would get us excited?

 

Experienced qualitative researcher in the field: You have field research experience in Tanzania. You have experience fielding qualitative research studies in sub-Saharan Africa. You have familiarity with qualitative data analysis software such as Atlas.ti or NVivo.

 

Behavioral economist: You have experience applying behavioral economics concepts.

 

Timeline:

Work is expected to begin in early November 2016, with an expected completion data by end of April 2017.

 

Expected Output:

A written report in English including key insights and detailed findings from the study.
